Oldest sake brewery in Japan's northeastern Tohoku region
YAMAZAKURA

Sasanokawa Shuzo — operating the Asaka Distillery — is one of Japan’s oldest sake and whisky producers. The company traces its roots back to 1765 in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, when it was founded as a sake brewery.

In 1946, Sasanokawa licensed whisky production, and in 2016 revitalized its distilling tradition by reopening Asaka Distillery with new pot stills and equipment.

Asaka is notable for being the only dedicated whisky distillery in the Tōhoku region, leveraging pure water from the nearby Asaka Canal and the dramatic seasonal climate of Fukushima for maturation.

Their signature whisky range — under the brand Yamazakura — includes small‑batch single malts and blended whiskies, praised for balance, smoothness and regional character.

Sasanokawa maintains a philosophy rooted in craftsmanship and tradition: even as they pursue modern whisky production, they honour their heritage as a centuries‑old sake house, producing spirits with care, local ingredients, and deep respect for the environment.
