Sasakawa is a single malt made entirely at Asaka Distillery, the pot-still malt distillery that Sasanokawa Shuzo opened in Koriyama, Fukushima, in 2016. It is distilled, aged and bottled on site from unpeated malt and matured for more than three years in first-fill American oak bourbon barrels. Fukushima's wide swings between day and night temperatures speed the exchange between spirit and wood.
The nose is soft and floral, with clover honey, vanilla, peach, rosewater and a fresh green note of sugar-snap peas. The palate is smooth, with hay, ginger shoot and marjoram over a hint of juicy red fruit, and the long, gentle finish brings black pepper and vanilla pod. Enjoy it neat or with a drop of water.
