The History
Heiwa Shuzo was founded in 1928 by Tamotsu Yamamoto. A sake brewer since the Edo period, Tamotsu Taniguchi was adopted by his son-in-law to take over the Yamamoto family, which had been a Buddhist temple for generations. At that time, his innate love of sake led him to establish a sake brewery.
2nd World War Woes...
The Heiwa Brewery has been threatened with closure on several occasions. During the Second World War, when the war was raging, the government ordered the evacuation of schoolchildren and the closure of sake breweries in Kyoto. Even after the war, the brewery was not allowed to regain its license. So Yasumasa Yamamoto, the second generation of the family, went to the cityhall to make a speech calling for the reopening of the brewery. Shaking with regret, he spoke of the disappointment of being forced to close the brewery and the hope of brewing sake in the peaceful post-war era, which was applauded by many. After all that passion, permission was finally given to reopen.
