KUMANO gin comes from Kishu Kumano Distillery in Wakayama, Japan's ume and citrus country. The distillery steeps 19 botanicals in neutral spirit and then distils them to showcase the prefecture's fruit: ripe Nanko ume, unshu mikan, yuzu and sudachi lead, while local budo sansho pepper, Mazuma wasabi and ginger add lift and a little heat.
The producer calls it fragrant, fruity and approachable even for newcomers to gin. At 53% it carries citrus well in a gin and tonic, a soda highball or a martini, and takes a dash of water when sipped.
