KUMANO Single Malt is distilled at Kishu Kumano Distillery, which the Wakayama ume producer Plum Shokuhin opened in 2019 in the mountains of the Kumano region. It is a non-peated malt whisky made in pot stills and matured for more than three years, mainly in ex-bourbon barrels. The Kii mountains bring sharp swings between day and night temperatures, which push the spirit in and out of the wood and add depth to a young whisky.
The nose is fresh, light and fruity. On the palate it is rounded and layered yet easy to enjoy, with vanilla and oak from the casks and a clean, warming finish. Bottled at 43%, it suits sipping neat, with a little water, or in a highball.
